Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Latin American holiday that honors the memory of loved ones who have passed away.

It is typically celebrated on November 1 and 2, although other adjacent days in October and November may be included. More joyous than macabre and far from a gloomy affair, the multi-day observance involves family and friends gathering to pay respects with prayer, food, and drink.

This year El Pasoans can pay homage to the deceased at three family-friendly events that include local performers, food trucks, and a huge float-filled parade downtown.

The El Paso Funeral Museum is putting the fun in funeral and marking the occasion with a Dia de los Muertos event that includes car show featuring some sweet rides – as well as a few last rides, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Located inside the west side Perches Funeral Home, the Dia de los Muertos event will include food trucks, vendors, an alter competition, a Lucha Frontera exhibition, a Catrina Runway show, and a static display of classic cars and tricked-out hearses,

    • Sunday, October 26
    • Perches Funeral Home, 6111 S. Desert Blvd
    • 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The cool thing about this Day of the Dead celebration is that it’s the only one in El Paso held in a cemetery, which is the traditional setting for Dia de los Muertos observances in Mexico.

And not just any cemetery, either.

With a history that dates back to the 1880′s, Concordia is the final resting place for more than 60,000 souls – some more restless than others it is said. The historic graveyard is considered by many to be a paranormal hotspot with more than its share of documented ghostly apparitions, shadow people, and disembodied voices.

Sponsored by the Concordia Heritage Association, the day will include vendors, food trucks, and live music per the event post.

    • Saturday, November 2
    • Concordia Cemetery, 3700 Yandell Dr
    • 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

By far the largest Day of the Dead celebration is the city sponsored event.

The annual Día de los Muertos Festival returns to the downtown city streets with another colorful and all-around fun afternoon that includes the popular and highly anticipated Day of the Dead parade, local performers, food trucks, and a variety of exhibits and free drop-in activities hosted by the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of History.
