Everything is free, from the entertainment to the food.“It’s a mix of family-friendly with a little bit of scary,” Stanley said of the evening’s offerings.Inflatables, airbrush tattoos, facepainting, henna, balloon animals, and a mechanical bull are part of the fun. Free hotdogs, hamburgers, cider slushies, popcorn, chips, and cotton candy are on the menu.Traditional family-friendly hayrides will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Those who wish to go for a ride must be in line no later than 7 p.m.Thirty individuals, families, and businesses will hand out candy from their vehicles for Trunk-or-Treat from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own candy-collection bags.The West Jefferson Community Association will host a costume contest at 7:30 p.m. Prizes will go to the top three winners in each of three age categories.The interior of the community center is being transformed into a haunted house. This year’s theme is “Haunted Asylum.” Lots of planning and volunteer hours have gone into the creation of this attraction. Families and other groups have come in for hours at a time, making props and putting together special effects. The haunted house will be open for tours from 5 to 8 p.m. Organizers request that those who go through it be at least 12 years old. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.Additional volunteers are needed to help with setup and operation of the festival.
