Jenna Bush Hager Claims Her Son Is “Gaslighting” Her Over Their Halloween Costumes: “He’s Pushing My Buttons”

Jenna Bush Hager may have left Hoda Kotb speechless after she revealed the Halloween costume she had planned with her son, but she is not giving up.

During a recent broadcast of Today , Bush Hager revealed that she wanted to dress up as the girlfriend of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle character her son, Hal, is dressing up as. She told Kotb that she has been “begging” him to let her dress up as his girlfriend.

But she admitted he has now moved onto “gaslighting” her.

“I have a son that’s gaslighting me again,” she told Kotb. “He goes through phases where he loves me and then he gaslights me, and then he loves me and then he gaslights me again.”

Bush Hager’s confession made Kotb laugh. “Isn’t it so funny when kids who are so little know exactly what they’re doing?” she asked her co-host.

It looks like that’s exactly what little Hal Hager is doing. “Oh he’s pushing my buttons, because now he’s asking other people to be his Ninja Turtle’s girlfriend,” she responded. “It was my idea and now he’s saying to others, ‘You can be my girlfriend, not mommy.'”

Bush Hager’s idea of dressing up as her son’s girlfriend appeared to scandalize Kotb when she first announced it.

When she told Kotb earlier this month about their plan, Kotb appeared visibly shocked until she replied, “Okay,” after a beat of silence.

She also questioned the Today crew when they began applauding Bush Hager’s idea.

“Why are you encouraging her?” she asked them.

But we’re all waiting to see what Kotb and Bush Hager have planned for Halloween. The Today hosts dress up every year together under a coordinated theme. Last year, they dressed up as their favorite singers, with Kotb and Bush Hager dressing up as Sonny and Cher.

This year, however, they’re remaining rather tightlipped about what they have planned. But Kotb teased today that their costumes are going to be “very dramatic.”
