Joel Klatt Predicts Trouble for Oregon Ducks vs. Purdue on Friday Night

The Oregon Ducks have been the talk of the college football world over the last week after taking down the Ohio State Buckeyes in a 32-31 thriller at Autzen Stadium.

Now, on a short week, Dan Lanning and the Ducks head to West Lafayette to face the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday night. It's a tough spot for any team, coming off of an emotional win and being asked to travel across the country with limited prep time.

It's the sort of set-up that has Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt forecasting some potential trouble for the Ducks.

"What do we see all the time in college football? Teams underperform the week after their most emotional win," Klatt said on his preview podcast. "We saw it with Alabama losing to Vanderbilt after beating Georgia. I think that we see it with Oregon and Purdue."

Earlier this year, the Crimson Tide got the win of the year over the Bulldogs but lost on the road to Vanderbilt in one of the biggest college football upsets in recent memory. After the Ducks' win over the Buckeyes, that could be a concern for Oregon.

"I'm not suggesting that Purdue is going to win the game, but 27.5 points is too much," Klatt said, speaking of the betting odds. "(Oregon) is traveling 2,000 miles, and they have to play them on a Friday night. Friday night road games for the favorite never go well for those teams."

More than just the strain of getting to the game on a short week, Oregon has to deal with a Purdue team that looked impressive last week against Illinois in a 50-49 overtime loss. With starting quarterback Hudson Card sidelined with an injury, freshman QB Ryan Browne stepped in and was highly productive, throwing for 297 yards and 3 TDs while adding 113 yards on the ground.

The addition of Browne certainly adds to the intrigue for those looking at a potential upset.

"Purdue at home will play well, and I guarantee that we see Oregon sleep-walk a little bit," Klatt said. "It's just human nature. It's nothing against Dan Lanning, it's nothing against Dillon Gabriel or any of the players, it's just human nature."

While Lanning is 20-0 in his career as a head coach against unranked teams, Klatt is arguing that 27.5 points is too much to give to a Purdue team at home that has been getting better over the last couple of weeks.

It's a fair point to raise. We will see on Friday night whether Klatt's concerns are real or not. Kick is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST, aired on Fox.

Not too sure about that. Looks like ducks are playing pretty well. They’re up by 14.
