Researchers have recently developed a new prototype called "living bioelectronics," a combination of living cells, gel, and electronics to integrate with living tissue. This device, composed of sensors, bacterial cells, and a gel made from starch and gelatin, was tested on mice and found to continuously monitor and alleviate psoriasis-like symptoms without irritating.

Traditional bioelectronics rely on rigid electronics with a soft layer to reduce irritation. However, researchers have added living cells, specifically Staphylococcus epidermidis, a skin bacterium known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The bacteria are embedded in a soft gel that mimics human tissue, while the sensors monitor skin conditions like temperature and humidity. The bacteria secrete compounds that reduce inflammation, significantly improving the mice's skin conditions.

This new system, the ABLE platform (Active Biointegrated Living Electronics), can be freeze-dried for convenient storage and rehydrated when needed. It is potentially long-lasting and easy to use. The researchers envision applications beyond treating skin conditions, such as wound healing for diabetic patients or creating devices that interact with different cell types, like insulin-producing or neuron-interfacing devices.

The study represents over 15 years of work understanding how living cells interact with synthetic materials. The team's collaboration with institutions like Rutgers University, Columbia University, and the University of Chicago’s Soft Matter Characterization Facility highlights the interdisciplinary effort to push the boundaries of bioelectronics. They are now working with the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to commercialize the technology.
