(WCIV) — Four South Carolina breweries earned prestigious awards at the 38th Great American Beer Fest, held from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12 in Denver.The event, hosted by the Brewer’s Association, is the largest beer competition in the United States.Holy City Brewing from North Charleston won gold for their Washout Wheat in the South German-Style Hefeweizen category."It's always nice to get a medal at GABF because it's not easy," said Chris Brown, owner of Holy City Brewing. "We took a bronze for Washout in 2014, so it's been 10 years. It’s nice to be able to get another one."Columbia Craft Brewing Co. in Columbia also secured a gold medal for their Modern Gothic in the German-Style Kölsch category. Hobcaw Brewing Co. from Mount Pleasant took home silver for their Mercy Cloud in the American Wheat Beer category. Munkle Brewing in Charleston won bronze medals for both their Gully Washer Wit in the Belgian-Style Witbier category and Munk Lager in the International-Style Pilsener category."We’re completely overjoyed that our head brewer Ram Khalsa was recognized with this incredible and well-deserved award," said Chris Mottram, co-owner of Hobcaw. "He’s been producing top-notch beer professionally for a decade, and this medal solidifies him as one of the best brewers in the nation."This marks Hobcaw’s first win at GABF. Columbia Craft last won in 2020 for their Carolinian, and Munkle last won in 2018 for their 5 Branches Biere de Garde. The competition featured 8,836 beers from 1,869 breweries and cideries across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. In total, 273 breweries and cideries earned 326 medals across 102 categories and 170 subcategories.</div></body>
