Under the tutelage of Kyle Davidson, the Chicago Blackhawks have not been afraid to extend players that have proved their worth and found a role in the future dynamic of the next great Blackhawks team. On Friday, the team carried out more business fitting the criteria, extending forward Landon Slaggert.

The former Notre Dame captain inked a two-year, $900K extension, tying him to the organization through the 2026-27 season. In addition, the contract is one-way by nature, meaning he will earn his $900K whether he's in the AHL or NHL.

Slaggert was drafted by the Blackhawks in the third-round (79th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. Slaggert played four seasons at Notre Dame, serving as captain during his senior campaign, before joining the Blackhawks. Following the conclusion of his 2023-24 collegiate season, Slaggert suited up for 16 games with the Hawks, tallying one goal and three assists along the way.

As noted, Slaggert's contract is one-way in nature, meaning he will be paid the $900K whether he's in the AHL or NHL. When a player is on a two-way contract, they are paid differently in the AHL compared to the NHL. As for waivers, Slaggert will likely remain waiver-exempt for the duration of the deal unless he becomes a NHL regular.

There is room for speculation regarding Slaggert's role beyond the 2024-25 season. A one-way contract certainly signals belief in his talents at the NHL level. In addition, his $900K contract is a bargain as a potential NHL regular, allowing the Blackhawks to continue using their cap space to fill holes on the roster.

In 2024-25, it's all about development for Slaggert. He will play meaningful minutes night in and night out with the Rockford IceHogs. So far, Slaggert has already tallied an assist in the IceHogs' season opener.
