It was announced that the Carolina Panthers would be releasing cornerback Troy Hill. Hill had signed a one-year contract with the team and had played there in 2023 as well.

Troy Hill is a familiar face to Los Angeles Rams fans. They most recently traded for Hill before the 2022 season. He suffered a groin injury in Week 2 of that season, which placed him on injured reserve on September 20. He returned to the team on October 24 and started 12 games, recording 67 tackles (45 solo) and an interception.

Should the Rams Add Troy Hill To The Secondary?

Previously to that Hill played five seasons with the Rams starting back in 2015 when the team was still in St. Louis. In that time, he played a significant role in the secondary. He consistently contributed with tackles, pass deflections, and interceptions. Hill’s best season came in 2020, where he recorded 77 tackles, 10 passes defended, and 3 interceptions.

The Rams have found themselves in a precarious position in the secondary. Darious Williams has come off the IR and played in his first game of the season against the Green Bay Packers. This coincided with the benching of veteran free agent addition Tre’Davious White and rookie 3rd rounder Kamren Kinchens. This left undrafted rookie Josh Wallace to man the nickel corner spot with Quentin Lake moving back to safety.

While the rookie played admirably, the defense would benefit greatly from having a veteran able to rotate in, as well as, help the young secondary step up their game.

Hill has been Carolina’s starting nickel corner this year. So far he has compiled 32 combined tackles including a tackle for loss. He has allowed 14 catches on 16 targets, allowing 116 yards and a 96.9 passer rating. He has only given up three receptions of ten yards or more and has yet to allow a touchdown.

The Rams have a knack for re-signing players after short stints abroad. This year they brought back John Johnson, Darious Williams, and Ahkello Witherspoon.
