Ex-Steelers quarterback may get his first start of 2024 in Week 7

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a quarterback controversy on their hands, as Justin Fields played clean and efficient football through six games of the season, leading the team to a 4-2 record. Veteran Russell Wilson is ready to return from injury and take back the starting role, but many in Steeler Nation are clamoring for Fields to keep his job.

While Pittsburgh has to address their quarterback situation, former Steeler Mason Rudolph may make his first start of the season in Week 7. Tennessee Titans signal-caller Will Levis is questionable to play versus the Buffalo Bills due to a right shoulder injury.

Rudolph's lone game action in 2024 came in Week 4 in relief of Levis. The former third-round pick entered Tennessee's Monday Night Football showdown versus the Miami Dolphins in the second quarter after Levis got hurt, completing 9-of-17 passes for 85 yards and leading the Titans to their first win of the campaign. Tennessee also notched it's first 30-point game in over 1,000 days.

Though Rudolph didn't do anything special in Week 4, he managed the game well and did something Levis has failed to accomplish: taking care of the ball.

The veteran proved he is one of the better backups in football last season when he started the final three games of the 2023 campaign for the Steelers, leading the team to the postseason.

In his final three regular season starts in Pittsburgh, Rudolph completed 74.3% of his passes, tossed three touchdowns to zero interceptions, and went 3-0.

If Rudolph gets the nod on Sunday and flourishes in Titans head coach Brian Callahan's system, many Steelers fans will wonder what could've been.

The former Oklahoma State standout was mostly a backup with Pittsburgh and never had the highest ceiling, but was always ready when given the opportunity and totaled an 8-4-1 record as the starter for the Steelers.

Whether it's Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, Mike Tomlin's group has a pivotal AFC matchup on Sunday Night, squaring off against the new-look New York Jets in Week 7.
