A significant weather system is moving into Arizona, with a cold front expected to sweep through the region by early afternoon today, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly in south-central Arizona. The National Weather Service in Phoenix reported that breezy to locally windy conditions will accompany this weather change, resulting in a marked drop in temperatures.

As the deepening upper-level low from the Great Basin moves southeastward, gusty winds have already begun impacting parts of southeast California. Showers and thunderstorms have been observed in northwest Arizona since late last night, and forecasters anticipate this activity to spread across the Phoenix area by mid-morning, eventually reaching Gila and Pinal Counties.

The storms could bring sufficient energy for some to become strong to severe, with wind gusts expected to reach between 25-35 mph across the region, and potentially up to 45 mph in southeast California. Rainfall amounts are expected to be modest, with lower desert areas likely seeing less than 0.10 inches, while higher elevations may receive between 0.25 and 0.50 inches.
