In the wake of Liam Payne's death, a devastatingly haunting letter the pop star wrote to his 10-year-old self has resurfaced. Radio host Scott Mills posted a video to the BBC Radio 2 Instagram page of Liam reading the letter in a 2020 BBC Radio 1 interview.

Mills explained that he had asked people to write a letter to their younger selves for the segment, somberly prefacing it with the statement, "Liam's is so poignant today."

The One Direction star died at 31-years-old on Wednesday, October 16, after falling out of the third story window of the hotel he was staying at in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He left behind a 7-year-old son, Bear, who he shared with singer Cheryl . His sudden and tragic death sent shockwaves throughout the world, leaving so many unanswered questions about the pop star's final moments.

In the video, Payne reads: "Get ready, it’s about to get a little bumpy. Cherish every moment with your loved ones right now as there’s only a few more family holidays to enjoy, life is about to turn surreal." Little did he know how true that statement would turn out to be.

The letter went on, and he mentioned auditioning for The X Factor, meeting the future mother of his child Cheryl, his struggles with self-doubt, and his rapid ascension into fame and pop stardom alongside his bandmates in One Direction. The letter is a powerful display of emotional vulnerability from someone who was catapulted into the spotlight and who had his every move dissected since the age of 14.

In what feels like the most hauntingly prophetic part of the letter, he wrote, "Then it will end for a while and you’ll be left with nothing but the steering wheel. It will feel scary, like you’re alone but you are not. You’re about to start a totally new journey with the most amazing person you’ve met so far, your son Bear."

At the time of the interview, nobody could have predicted the One Direction star's tragic death.
