Matthew Walker, 25, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to 50 years in prison for fatally shooting David Remen and seriously injuring Michael Hardy during an early morning attack at a temporary labor agency on February 14, 2019, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia announced.

Walker was convicted in January 2024 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on charges including first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

The sentencing, handed down by Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo, also includes five years of supervised release following Walker’s prison term.

According to court documents, Walker entered Trojan Labor, a temporary labor agency in Northeast D.C., around 5:45 a.m. on the day of the attack.

He ran directly to the agency’s dispatch office and opened fire, fatally shooting Remen, a worker, and wounding Hardy, the manager.

Remen died at the scene, while Hardy survived the attack but later died in 2022 from his injuries, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Surveillance footage captured Walker entering the office wearing a hoodie with a distinctive red and white stripe, firing several shots as smoke filled the room, court records show.

Walker fled the scene and discarded his clothing, mask, and firearm nearby, according to prosecutors.

Key evidence linking Walker to the crime included DNA recovered from the discarded items and ballistic analysis, the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated.

Court documents also revealed that a piece of paper with Walker's phone number was found in a jacket he had abandoned near the crime scene.
