DAPHNE, Ala. ( WKRG )—Daphne High School’s wrestling team staff was selected for a national honor after only five years into the program.

This came as no surprise to the team that has worked day in and day out to make this happen.

The girls wrestling program at DHSl won their third state championship in four years.

In doing so, their staff was recognized by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, naming them the Wrestling Staff of the Year.

The girls on the team told News 5, they believe this recognition acknowledges their team’s effort as a program.

Coach Greg Jefcoat, who’s been coaching at Daphne for all five years, said DHS’s program was selected over hundreds of programs in the country.

“I’m very proud of our culture and our community,” said Coach Jefcoat. “I think it’s a representation of not just the coaches but everything that we do here at Daphne.”

Kalyse Hill, who joined the team in 8th grade and is now a senior, has been a part of the program since the beginning. Hill told News 5 that the recognition feels good because the team is finally being recognized for their hard work.

The team and coaching staff are being honored at a presentation Saturday night where they will receive a plaque. The event is expected to have local elected officials in attendance.
