With less than a month remaining in the 2023 MLB season, the Boston Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom.

Shortly after, Boston's general manager Brian O'Halloran accepted a new role as VP of baseball operations, leaving the general manager job open. And, despite Craig Breslow taking over as the CBO for the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox never hired a general manager for the season.

After a full year in the position, Breslow is expected to hire a general manager, and according to MassLive's Sean McAdam, there's a top candidate for the job already.

McAdam reported that an executive with one of the other 29 MLB clubs said that they'd "be surprised if the Red Sox didn't promote assistant GM Paul Toboni to the position."

Toboni, 33, interviewed for Boston's CBO job before the Red Sox ultimately offered the position to Breslow. Breslow named Toboni his assistant general manager quickly after he was hired.

Prior to accepting the role last year, Toboni served as Boston's VP of amateur scouting and player development. He joined the Red Sox organization in 2015 after playing in the Oakland A's minor leagues.
