This homemade flatbread recipe is a simple, yet delicious way to create soft and chewy flatbreads with minimal ingredients. Perfect for beginners, it requires basic pantry staples like flour, baking powder, and olive oil, making it a quick and versatile option for any meal. The flatbreads cook up quickly on the stovetop, giving them a light, golden exterior while staying soft inside. Garnished with fresh parsley, black sesame seeds, and a brush of melted butter, these flatbreads are flavorful and visually appealing.

For an extra touch, you can elevate the flatbreads with garlic-infused butter, adding a rich, aromatic layer that enhances their taste. This option makes them a fantastic pairing with dips like hummus or tzatziki, or as a side for soups, salads, or grilled dishes. Whether served plain or with the garlicky twist, this flatbread recipe offers a delightful homemade experience with a gourmet touch.

Homemade Flatbread with Optional Garlic Butter

    Ingredients:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
    • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
    • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds (for garnish)

    Optional Garlic Butter:

    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 1-2 cloves garlic, finely minced or crushed

    Instructions:

    1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
      • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Stir well to make sure everything is evenly distributed.
    2. Add Wet Ingredients:
      • Make a well in the center of the dry mixture. Add the olive oil and warm water. Mix with a spoon until a rough dough forms.
    3. Knead the Dough:
      • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Adjust with small amounts of flour if it’s too sticky or water if it’s too dry.
    4. Rest the Dough:
      • Shape the dough into a ball, place it back into the bowl, and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
    5. Prepare the Garlic Butter (Optional):
      • While the dough rests, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Be careful not to burn the garlic. You can either leave the garlic bits in or strain them out, depending on your preference.
    6. Roll Out the Dough:
      • Divide the dough into 4-6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten it slightly. Use a rolling pin to roll each piece into a thin circle or oval, about 1/8 inch thick.
    7. Cook the Flatbreads:
      • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place one flatbread in the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes, until bubbles form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side. Repeat for the remaining flatbreads.
    8. Garnish and Serve:
      • After removing each flatbread from the pan, brush with either the plain melted butter or the garlic-infused butter (if using). Sprinkle with chopped parsley and black sesame seeds for a flavorful and visually appealing finish.
    9. Enjoy!
      • Serve the flatbreads warm. They pair wonderfully with dips, salads, or as a side to soups and grilled dishes.

    Tips:

    • Flavor Variations: Add a pinch of dried herbs or spices like cumin or oregano to the dough for an extra flavor twist.
    • Vegan Option: Substitute the butter with olive oil for a vegan-friendly version.

This versatile flatbread recipe is easy to follow, and the garlic butter option adds a delicious depth of flavor—perfect for elevating a simple meal!
