AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 12 Westlake turned it up after the opening quarter and rolled to a 48-7 win over Bowie on Friday in District 26-6A action at Chaparral Stadium.

The Chaparrals led 7-0 after the first quarter but added another score on the first play in the second quarter to take a two-score lead. Then, a big play on defense ignited the home team.

Brandon Clark stepped in front of a Cruz Tello pass and returned it 32 yards for a pick-six and helped carry the Chaps to a 28-0 lead at halftime.

“It was a great result and our offense did some good things in the second half,” Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said. “Our defense held a good football team to seven points, so we’ll take that any day.”

The Bulldogs got on the board in the third quarter on a Tello pass to Rowen Wells for a 22-yard score. There was a question about it after Wells stretched out to break the plane of the goal line and the ball popped loose, but officials conferred and said Wells had control as he crossed the goal line.

A similar question came up as Westlake quarterback Rees Wise crossed the goal line on a short touchdown run in the second half, and the replay showed that maybe the ball was coming loose before he made the line, but officials ruled it a touchdown. Replay review is not available in Texas high school football until the state championship game.

The scene is now set for Austin’s most fierce high school football rivalry, the Battle of the Lake between the Chaps (6-1, 3-0) and Lake Travis next week. The Cavs, ranked No. 6 in the Class 6A Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rankings, beat Dripping Springs 49-21 to stay undefeated. The powerhouses clash at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25 at Cavalier Stadium.

Bowie (5-3, 1-3) hosts Akins next week.
