But they’ve already surrounded themselves with plenty of good company, as evidenced by the impressive array of guest stars who appear on the LP, named Dear Gods.Himsa’s John Pettibone, Great Falls’ Demian Johnston, and Helms Alee’s Ben Verellen—all from Seattle—make special appearances as vocalists on the 11-track effort. Minus the Bear’s Matt Bayles also contributed to Dear Gods, playing keys and also handling mixing duties. Proving their mettle as stand-up people, Yellfire even roped in Nouela Johnston, who used to be a member of the quartet but isn’t any longer, for a guest spot on their record.Dear Gods is a long time coming, as Yellfire put out their first single, “We’re Not Saints,” way back in December 2018. Snugged in between the single and Dear Gods was their 2019 EP, Lara Flynn Boyle, named after one the main actors in David Lynch’s Pacific Northwestern surrealist drama Twin Peaks.The band’s current configuration includes Casey Nolan (and fan of Bayles collaborators Botch) playing bass, Jerome Sauer on guitars and vocals, sitting at the drum kit, and Eric Christianson providing additional guitar work. She’s an English lab that’s about a year and four months old. But Harri’s backstory goes back about six years, when my then-boyfriend and I were dating. We mutually had our own dogs: He had Kits, a Shiba Inu that came from a friend who was no longer able to keep her, and I had Hershey, a Dachshund-Chocolate Lab that I received from my family’s vet in a “life-saving” situation. They were both only-daughters, and they preferred to keep it that way. It took us a year and a half of training for them to just tolerate the sight of each other, let alone breathe the same air, but they were able to make it work (multiple, multiple pounds of treats later).Shortly after the boyfriend became the husband, in less than a year, both perfect dogs had passed away. Several months went by with every grocery/house shopping list ending with “a dog.” We both didn’t know what we wanted: Husband wanted “two big dumb dogs,” while I wanted to start with one medium-to-big-size dog: big enough to go on hikes with, small enough to be able to pick up). We were constantly on Petfinder and humane shelter websites. One day, the Internet algorithms shared a puppy that was the “runt” of the litter and was needing a home. When seeing it, I immediately ran to the husband and said, “Hear me out, we should get this puppy.” A few days later, we had Harri.Given that the world is more anxiety-inducing than in recent memory, does having a dog mitigate those tensions and maybe even alleviate some of your concerns?One-hundred percent. Folks who grew up with dogs (or really just pets in general) can probably relate, but it’s wild to reflect back on our lives and realize how big of a part our friends were in them. My first dog, when I was growing up, was a Dachshund named Ginger. She was in my life from when I was 7 years old until I graduated college. I then got Hershey a few months after graduating college and moved to Seattle. She saw everything from the long-term boyfriends that never worked out to the different bands, friends, and roommates that have come and gone, only leading up to meeting my husband and seeing me get married. I can only imagine what Harri is going to see and help me with in the years to come.Do you take your dog on tour? If so, what are the pros and cons of doing so? Colorful stories encouraged.Negative. I’ve never seen a dog on tour before, but I will say that I’m the biggest fan of “venue” dogs. Showing up to the show or crashing at the house of a friendly person who lets you crash there after the concert, and you see that dog–It’s the best feeling. It does suck, though, when the dog favors the cat-person in the band. Unforgivable.Has your dog ever participated in a Yellfire show, maybe even making an appearance onstage?Negative. We also don’t practice at a place that would be great for dogs to either hang out at the practice space or wait in the car.Has your dog met other dogs whose owners are also musicians? Is there a small community of musicians with dogs that are familiar with each other?One of Harri’s best friends is a dog named Navi. When together, their nickname is “The Golden Girls.” They’re the bestest of friends. Navi’s mom is a guitar player in one of the other bands that I play in, and we are fortunate enough to practice in her basement. There have been a handful of times that I have brought Harri over while we practice.
