Sitting at 2-4 on the year, the New York Jets made the drastic decision to trade for Davante Adams earlier this week. But in the eyes of FS1 personality Nick Wright, the move largely won’t make much of a difference because the team just “isn’t good.”
On Friday’s edition of First Things First , the cast broke down the Jets’ upcoming matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7. Despite sporting the worse record of the two teams, the Jets are 1.5-point favorites in the game, which Wright doesn’t quite understand.
“I want the Jets to lose this game,” said Wright. “Purely because I want everyone to acknowledge what is so patently obvious to me. They’re not good. I’m frustrated that all the Jets conversations are phrased like, ‘What’s gone wrong? What’s the issue?’ When the answer is, ‘I don’t know man, it’s the same issue that bad teams have. They’re bad.’ Nothing weird is happening. They are poorly coached. I said that before the year, they were the first team to fire their coach.
“They don’t have a cogent offensive attack. Said that before the year. ‘Oh, we fixed it with Todd Downing.’ Y’all connected on a Hail Mary and scored 20 points…Y’all scored 13 points other than the Hail Mary. And everyone is like ‘That’s the best they’ve looked in forever.'”
Wright then spoke about a graphic shown on the screen, which portrayed that the Jets are averaging the exact same number of points per game (18.8) as they did at the same point of the year last season.
“Last year, they won seven games with that level of offense…But here’s the truth, that’s the exact level of offense you have this year. Through six weeks, look at the number. Last year’s team had a better record. Your points are identical. Your yards-per-play are identical. You have one fewer giveaway and one fewer win. And by the way, last year’s team started 4-3.”
Say what you will about Wright admitting that he hopes the Jets lose and whether that may be due to a long-running vendetta against Aaron Rodgers . But the numbers he produced about the Jets averages at this point of the season compared to last year don’t lie.
Yes, the coverage of the Jets thus far of the season may be a bit extensive given their lack of success. But isn’t there an argument that someone like Aaron Rodgers, who has been one of the best quarterbacks in football for over a decade, has earned this kind of constant coverage?
Whether Nick Wright likes it or not, the Jets are a pretty massive draw thanks to Rodgers regardless of whether or not they are having much success. So expect plenty more weeks of the Jets potentially leading the way in terms of storylines around the NFL.
