A driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations after Border Patrol officers seized more than 645 pounds of methamphetamine.

The drugs, authorities said, were concealed in a shipment of green onions.

CBP officers from the Calexico Commercial Facility encountered a 63-year-old man on Oct. 10, driving a trailer carrying the shipment, which was referred for further inspection.

A K-9 unit alerted the officers to further examine the trailer, and they found over 600 packages hidden within the shipment, with 646.61 pounds of methamphetamine. The estimated street value is at $775,000.

“This is truly an outstanding demonstration of our officer’s ability to think outside of the box and further exemplifies our adaptability to find illicit contraband no matter where the narcotics are hidden,” said Roque Caza, Port Director for the Area Port of Calexico.

The narcotics and trailer were seized.

The seizure is a result of Operation Apollo, a counter-fentanyl effort that began in October 2023 that targets the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.
