Cemetery to open gates for Day of the Dead celebration in Galt on October 26

The Galt Cemetery will host a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on October 26 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free. The cemetery is located on 14180 Joy Street in Galt.

The event will begin with a Mass and dove release. At 10:15 am, Raices Mexicanas will perform traditional Mexican dance. An Aztec dance group, Yolotl Tonantzin, will perform at 10:45 am. The band Los Doble Jrs will perform at 11:45 am, followed by Nostalgias de Mexico at 2:00 pm. The last group to perform will be Mariachi Luz de Luna at 3:15 pm.

The Day of the Dead celebration has become an annual event at the cemetery. Last year, altars to the deceased were set up and a car show was held.

Traditional foods for Day of the Dead

Foods traditionally consumed in Mexico on Day of the Dead include atole, mole and pan de muerto. They might be placed as an offering on an altar for the deceased.

Atole is a warm beverage made with masa harina, piloncillo (unprocessed cane sugar) and cinnamon.

Mole is a savory sauce frequently served over chicken. Mole poblano is one of the many varieties of the sauce.

Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) is a buttery bread often flavored with anise seeds or orange zest. The loaves are round and traditionally feature decorations resembling bones.
