San Francisco Unified School District Names New Superintendent, Halts Disliked School Closure Plans

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is undergoing significant leadership changes as Superintendent Matt Wayne resigned late Friday. The Board of Education announced plans to appoint Maria Su, the current Executive Director of the Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families, as his replacement.

Wayne’s resignation comes just days after San Francisco Mayor London Breed expressed a lack of confidence in his ability to lead the district. The school board accepted Wayne's resignation in a closed session on Friday night.

One of Su’s first actions as superintendent will be to halt the district’s ongoing evaluation of potential school closures, mergers, or repurposing, which had been under review. The decision to stop these processes reflects a shift in priorities under Su’s leadership as she steps in to guide the district through a challenging period.
