"He is an MVP candidate who can't win the MVP" - Skip feels sorry for JB for not reaching his full potential because of Tatum

The Boston Celtics ' impressive roster allows all of its players, including their two marquee stars, to attain dominance by fulfilling their limited roles. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are required to average just over 25 points per game rather than register a 30-point performance every night for their team to win games.

Both players share credit for their continued dominance and are the main engines of the Bean Town team. According to Skip Bayless , this scenario has extreme consequences for JB, who never gets an opportunity to attain his MVP potential simply because "Taco Jay's" presence steals all the spotlight from the 6'6" guard.

Bayless blames Tatum for limiting Brown's potential

During his appearance on 'the PatBev podcast, the 72-year-old analyst declared the Celtics as the clear favorites to win another championship in the 2024-25 season. However, in his view, it's Brown, not Jayson Tatum , who adds a scoring threat to the team, stating that whenever the three-time All-Star has the ball, a basket is inevitable.

Despite such consistency, Brown repeatedly fails to garner a spot among the top 10 players in the NBA, leading Skip to porcelain how his co-star limits his MVP potential.

"Like everybody else, it's hard for me to pick anybody else over the Celtics this year, and it's not because of Jayson Tatum. It's because of his running mate - Jaylen Brown, who obviously took over the playoffs last year. He is an MVP candidate who can't win the MVP because of Jayson Tatum and because of their supporting cast," Bayless said . "That team is a behemoth because it has two superstars who barely sort of make peace with each other and coexist barely. Their championship belongs more to Jaylen Brown than to Jayson Tatum."

    Does JT steal Jaylen's thunder?

It's true that the five-time All-Star often grabs all the spotlight when talking about the Celtics, which might explain why Brown did not receive an All-NBA selection last season despite averaging 23 points on a career-best 49.9% shooting from the field, along with registering career-high averages in assists and steals, last season.

However, in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, despite Tatum averaging a series-high 30.3 points and 10.3 rebounds, Brown was named the Conference Finals MVP. Similarly, in the championship round against the Dallas Mavericks, despite Duke product registering a team-high tally in points, rebounds, and assists, the 'Old Man' claimed the Finals MVP award.

So, while it is true that Brown's 'star' reputation might have suffered because of Tatum's presence, the reverse is also true. Nevertheless, seeing Skip unapologetically discredit the presence of the 6'8" forward in elevating Brown's performances highlights how this might be another one of his hate rants against a player—only this time at the expense of Tatum.
