A suspect is in custody after an officer-involved shooting unfolded at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown on Saturday morning, said Chris Denham, Elizabethtown Police Department spokesperson, during a news conference .

Elizabethtown Police responded to the hospital shortly after 5 a.m. after getting reports of an active shooter, Denham said. Officers encountered a man armed with a handgun, leading one officer to shoot the man. Baptist Health Hardin officials said the shooting took place in the hospital's Emergency Department in a statement released on social media after the shooting.

It's unclear how many shots the officer fired, Denham said. The suspect was taken to UofL Hospital by air with non-life-threatening injuries, Denham said.

Denham said the suspect fired shots before police arrived, though the number of shots he fired is unknown. The only person hurt in the shooting was the suspect, he added.

"This is a very active investigation. It will be very lengthy. The scene is very large," Denham said.

Elizabethtown Police is handling the criminal investigation related to the hospital shooting, Denham said. The Kentucky State Police Critical Response Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard protocol, he said.

"I really want to commend the efforts of Baptist Health Hardin security staff. They contacted an armed gunman unarmed," Denham said. "Really, really proud of them, but also we're very proud of officers for their swift actions."

The officer who fired shots will be placed on a two-week administrative leave, per standard protocol, Denham said.

Officials have not released the name of the officer or the suspect.

"While we are grateful that our staff, patients and visitors were not physically harmed, we ask the community to join us in supporting those who were involved," Baptist Health Hardin officials said. "We wish to thank our staff and security team for their efforts and commitment to safety, and special thanks to the Elizabethtown Police Department for their quick response and professionalism during this incident."
