A cruise passenger woke up to a flooded stateroom while sailing on Norwegian Epic this week.

The incident, which the passenger wrote about on Reddit, occurred on the second-to-last day of the ship's 11-night Greek Isles sailing, which departed from Rome on October 6.

"Currently on the Epic. Second to last day and our cabin has completely flooded. Talk about a wake up call," the Reddit user said.

The unidentified passenger, staying in cabin 8052, a mini-suite with a balcony, discovered their cabin floor covered in several inches of water.

According to news reports on the story, the cause of the flood was a burst air conditioning unit in the corridor outside their stateroom.

While the passenger did not specify whether other cabins were affected, they received a $400 onboard credit, which was later converted to a $200 cash refund for the inconvenience.

Norwegian Epic: A Ship Showing Its Age

The Norwegian Epic, launched in 2010 and last refurbished in 2020, is one of the older ships in the NCL fleet. As with any aging vessel, it may be experiencing some maintenance issues.

While the crew works diligently to keep the ship in good condition, cruise ships typically require dry dock every five years for thorough maintenance and inspections.

The Epic is scheduled to go into dry dock in November 2025 for a major overhaul.

This comes after several passengers reported signs of wear and tear on the ship, including plumbing issues in their cabins.

Plumbing Problems Not Unique to Norwegian Epic

It's important to note that flooding and plumbing problems are not exclusive to the Norwegian Epic. Factors like foreign objects flushed down toilets or heavy rainfall can contribute to these issues.

While the crew works to ensure a smooth sailing, unexpected events can occur, especially on older ships that require more maintenance.
