NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 14-year-old student at a Mastic Beach high school was arrested on Friday for bringing a loaded handgun into school, Suffolk County Police and school administrators said.

The teen was caught with the weapon at William Floyd High School, located at 240 Mastic Beach Rd., just before 1:20 p.m. on Friday.

“Just prior to high school dismissal, a high school student was brought to an administrator’s office for possible vaping,” the William Floyd School District said in a statement. “When the student was searched with a metal detecting wand, it was discovered that the student was in possession of a handgun.”

Administrators confiscated the gun and immediately contacted police. The school district said that the investigation has been turned over to law enforcement, and that the student “will be dealt with through the criminal justice system.”

The student, who is not being identified because of his age, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, police said.

He was held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and his arraignment was scheduled for Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

“In addition to any criminal charges, the student will also be subject to severe consequences according to the school district code of conduct,” the school district said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives with the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.

People need to stop being besties with their kids and/or neglecting them. So many are out of control, whether it’s from a sense of entitlement or from unaddressed issues or both.
