Alabama Woman Sentenced For Using Deceased Person's Identity for Car Purchase

"Financial fraud and identity theft costs victims billions of dollars each year,” said Acting United States Attorney Davidson. "Criminals will use any information they can acquire to conduct their schemes and line their own pockets. I encourage everyone to be vigilant by reviewing your accounts and credit reports regularly for unusual activity. If you do see something suspicious, report it immediately to the appropriate financial institution and law enforcement."

On October 16, 2024, 32-year-old Alabama resident Heaven Noretta Robinson was sentenced by a federal judge to 57 months in prison for her involvement in a scheme to fraudulently add her name to credit card accounts and steal the identity of a deceased man to purchase a vehicle. The sentencing was announced by Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson and U.S. Postal Inspector in Charge Scott Fix of the Postal Inspection Service’s Houston Division.

    Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

According to court records, Robinson’s fraudulent activities took place between February and October 2022. During that period, she gained access to bank and credit card accounts without the owners’ permission. Once she had access, she added herself to the accounts and had new credit cards mailed to her address. She then used these cards for personal purchases at various retail stores.

In addition to the credit card scheme, Robinson also admitted to using the identity of a deceased man to co-sign a loan for a vehicle. On September 17, 2022, she presented the stolen identity at a Montgomery car dealership, claiming it belonged to her uncle. The loan was approved, but the deceased individual’s family had no knowledge of the scheme and had never authorized Robinson’s use of his information.

Ultimately, Robinson pleaded guilty to mail fraud and aggravated identity theft on July 3, 2024. In addition to her 57- month prison sentence, Robinson was ordered to pay $33,550.93 in restitution to her victims and will serve three years of supervised release following her incarceration. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Robinson will be required to complete her full sentence.
