Before ascending to beyond-reproach world No. 1 status in the world of golf, reigning Olympic gold medalist , two-time Masters champ, and all-around wholesome American Scottie Scheffler starred for the Texas Longhorns in college. Overcoming the long shadow cast by Jordan Spieth whose career peak came earlier, Scheffler kept plugging along and, still only 28 years old, looks like he'll be one of the greatest handful of golfers the world has ever seen. It must've been a dream for Scottie to hop on the ESPN College GameDay set as his Longhorns prepare to battle Georgia in Austin on Saturday night. I can only assume he's picking the home team to knock off the Bulldogs and confirm their status as the top-ranked team in the country. But it was another
notable prediction Scottie made as the day's celebrity guest picker that had me and many viewers in stitches. Historic as Scottie's 2024 season was, the only thing that prevented it from being truly GOAT-tier was a second major title. Once he got the green jacket again at Augusta, Scottie was shut out at the other three majors. Didn't help that Xander Schauffele self-actualized in real time and picked off two of those at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Many believe, including myself, that things could've been different at the PGA if not for Scottie getting arrested by the most hardcore power-tripping local cop you've ever heard of. Scottie's arrest happened while we were on a company retreat, and let me tell you, talk about "surreal." Waking up, opening Twitter, and seeing Scottie's now-ubiquitous mug shot as the very first thing in my feed? I couldn't make sense of it. Had to be Photoshop, right? Nope! https://twitter.com/ByPatForde/status/1791445132606095723 The PGA Championship was at Valhalla in Louisville. Thankfully other officers came to their senses and released Scottie in time so that he could finish out the tournament. All things considered, it was a minor miracle that he finished in a tie for eighth. Cut to today's
College GameDay . The chance to fade the Louisville Cardinals presented itself, and Scottie did not disappoint in the slightest. https://twitter.com/GolfDigest/status/1847672010190524526 Instant classic quote. I used to root against Scottie, in part because I'm such a massive Rory McIlroy fan. He's growing on me, I gotta admit. Plus, I just respect all-time greatness in sports in just about any form it comes in. Scottie is a good guy. And he's high-key pretty funny. In what could've been an awkward TV appearance given his more reserved nature, he acquitted himself very well here. Kind of a bold call from our guy Scottie, though. Miami is only a 4.5-point road favorite. Helps to have a stud quarterback like Cam Ward on their side, but the Hurricanes are in for a test today and dealing with the pressures of being highly ranked and undefeated. They'll get Louisville's best shot. We'll see if Scottie's right!
