Conference play is officially underway in college football, and we have several marquee matchups in the Week 8 slate. One big SEC contest on Saturday is between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Oklahoma Sooners, as both teams are relatively equal on paper.
However, Oklahoma had one of the worst first quarters a football team could have in the sport. The Sooners quickly fell to a 0-21 deficit as the offense couldn't get anything going whatsoever.
South Carolina took that three-possession lead within the first six minutes of the game. The Gamecocks managed to force three turnovers, with two of them ending in touchdowns by the defense. The Sooners ended up pulling quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. out of the game and replaced him with Jackson Arnold.
Oklahoma completely collapsed in its first nine snaps of the game, according to Sooners' beat writer Eric Bailey. Within those nine snaps, the team had only gained 14 yards of total offense, along with the three turnovers and allowing two defensive touchdowns.
College football fans quickly hopped on X, formerly known as Twitter, to roast Oklahoma and its head coach Brent Venables. Fans everywhere simply can't believe what they're seeing from Venables and his team on Saturday.
"Oklahoma demonstrating just how disastrous having a coach leave and proceeding to make the wrong coaching hire in this day and age can be," claimed one fan .
Brandon Walker of Barstool Sports stated, "Oklahoma fans, it's OK. You're now realizing that I'm the only one courageous enough to tell you the truth. Venables is awful. I forgive you all but you have to say 'Sorry Brandon. I'm just a stupid a** Oklahoma fan and you were right.'"
"Brent Venables is the prime example of just because you’re an excellent coordinator does not mean you’d be a good head coach," claimed another fan .
Although the Sooners hold a 4-2 record entering Week 8, they haven't been able to find much success since joining the SEC. Since being hired as head coach in 2022, Venables carries a 20-12 record.
Saturday's contest is the Sooners' fourth SEC matchup since joining the conference in the 2024 offseason. Entering the contest against South Carolina, Oklahoma is 1-2 against SEC programs.
We'll see if they can bounce back but based on the schedule ahead, the Sooners will have an uphill battle to make a playoff appearance. Oklahoma still has SEC matchups against Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama, and LSU.
