    Upper Arlington places second, Columbus Academy third in OTCA state tennis tournament

    The Upper Arlington girls tennis team earned its second consecutive runner-up finish in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I state tournament Saturday at the College of Wooster.

    UA (14-1) was swept 3-0 in the final by Mason, which won its eighth consecutive championship.

    Senior Alice Hawley lost to Pratyusha Chadhuri 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, senior Ava Kramer and junior Dani Ball fell to Saanvi Reddy and Emma Wagner 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles and at second doubles, junior Emily Li and sophomore Nancy Lin were swept by Adriana Moreno and Bhavana Singidi 6-1, 6-1.

    Hawley and sophomore Alexa Roth were coming off a fourth-place finish in doubles in the OHSAA individual state tournament Friday in Wooster. Chaudhuri and Wagner repeated as champions .

    OTCA matches end as soon as one team wins three courts.

    UA was making its fifth trip to state since 2019 and sought both its first title since 2013 and 14th all-time.

    Earlier Saturday, UA defeated Medina Highland 3-0 in a semifinal.

    Hawley beat Lily Hantz 6-1, 6-2 at second singles, sophomore Kylie Husted beat Ella Tople 6-0, 6-2 at third singles and at first doubles, Ball and Kramer swept Ally Haynes and Hailey Pennington 6-0, 6-2.

    Columbus Academy finishes third in Division II

    The Vikings split two matches in the Division II tournament Saturday, losing to Gates Mills Gilmour Academy 3-1 in a semifinal before bouncing back to defeat Toledo Maumee Valley Country Day by the same score in the third-place match.

    Academy (20-2) placed third for the third time in four years. The Vikings’ only OTCA title came in 2008.

    Against Country Day, the Vikings got wins from sophomore Gabrielle Stewart at second singles, 6-1, 6-4 over Layan Ridi; the first doubles team of senior Tamanna Arya and junior Sophie Wu, 6-0, 6-0 over Jenna Ridi and Imaan Zafar; and at No. 2 doubles, where senior Mary Panley and junior Lara Wood shut out Shrishtie Baskara and Winter Roach 6-0, 6-0.

    Academy’s only win against Gilmour Academy came at first doubles, where Panley and Wu defeated Quinn Doyle and Gianna Francisco 6-0, 6-2.
