Keene Introduces New Winter Parking Rules: On-Street Parking Only Prohibited During Storms

Keene, NH – The City of Keene has announced updated winter weather on-street parking rules, which take effect immediately. Under the new regulations, vehicles can now remain parked on the street overnight in public areas throughout the winter, unless a Winter Weather Parking Ban is declared. This new approach replaces the previous rule that prohibited overnight on-street parking daily from November to April.

The changes, based on a recently adopted City Council ordinance, aim to improve parking availability and convenience for residents, while also supporting the City’s broader housing goals.

When winter storms are forecast, the Public Works Director will declare a Winter Weather Parking Ban with at least six hours' notice. Notifications will be sent through email, text message, and social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and will also be available on the City’s website at www.KeeneNH.gov/snow. The notifications will specify the start time of the ban and provide information on alternative off-street parking locations.

As the City begins implementing this new parking system during early winter storms, efforts will focus on informing the public. Residents who typically park in on-street locations are encouraged to sign up for notifications to stay informed about upcoming parking bans. These updates will help ensure cars are removed from streets in advance of snow removal operations.

The main objective of the new rules is to ensure clear, safe roads for residents. While vehicles left on the street during parking bans may be ticketed, the City’s initial focus will be on education and communication. Residents are encouraged to share information about the new parking system with family, friends, and visitors to help ensure everyone is aware of the changes.

For additional details, including maps of public parking lots, a public input form, and the full ordinance text, visit www.KeeneNH.gov/snow. Residents can also contact the Public Works Department at (603) 352-6550 with any questions.

These new parking regulations reflect Keene’s commitment to meeting the needs and convenience of its residents while maintaining safe and effective snow removal operations.
