DVIS holds its 11th annual Mutt Strut to raise awareness and gather supplies for their kennel

TULSA, Okla. — Domestic Violence Intervention Services held its 11th annual Mutt Strut to raise awareness about domestic violence and to gather supplies for their kennel.

"[Mutt Strut] is a pet parade and costume contest," explained DVIS spokesperson Laurel Williamson. "It's our 11th annual Mutt Strut and it raises awareness about domestic violence, the services we provide, the importance of the owner-animal bond of course, and it's a great way to raise supplies. There's no charge to attend, you just show up. We do collect in-kind donations like dog food, beds, bowls, leashes, flea and tick control, things like that to help us keep our kennel running, so we never have to turn people away."

Williamson explained why their kennel is a vital resource for those attempting to escape abusive situations.

"DVIS was the first domestic violence shelter in Oklahoma to include a kennel. So if a person is fleeing an abusive situation, one of those hesitations can come from what might happen to their beloved pet if they have to leave them behind. Many shelters don't have the capacity to accept pets, but we do and we wanted to remove all barriers that we could for women who need a safe place to go."

Alongside raising supplies, the event brings people together to celebrate their pets and have a good time.

"It's so fun. We see people of all ages, all walks of life, because everybody loves their dog," said Williamson.

Williamson also shared information about one of the resources DVIS provides.

"We have a 24-hour help line. It's 918-743-5763. Day or night, it could be 4am on Christmas Eve and an advocate will answer, whether you need a safety plan or you need information on how to flee yourself or you know someone who needs help and you want to be able to support them."
