Washington Capitals Second-Period Powers 3-2 Victory

The Washington Capitals used a powerful offensive outburst in the second period in a 3-2 against the Dallas Stars at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night. Washington improved to 2-1-0, which improved to fourth place in the Metropolitan Division. Dallas suffers their first loss of the season, which slips to 4-1-0, and despite the loss, it still maintains control at the top of the Western Conference’s Pacific Division.

Game Story vs. Dallas Stars (10/17/24)

The Dallas Stars struck first with a short-handed goal from Colin Blackwell at 12:19 in the first period. The 31-year-old forward received a breakaway opportunity and slipped the puck past Washington’s starting goalie Charlie Lindgren. It was the only goal in the frame, and Dallas entered the intermission with a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

On Tuesday evening at the home rink, the Washington Capitals used a strong second period to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights. They applied the same formula to take down the Stars on Thursday night with familiar results. Tom Wilson picked up his third goal of the 2024 season 55 seconds into the second period. Center Dylan Strome scored at 6:15 to put Washington ahead 2-1 at Capital One Arena.

Dallas’s speedy forward Jason Robertson scored his 2nd tally of the season to tie the game at 13:09. Washington countered a few minutes later when the Capitals' offensive pressure caused a turnover, allowing Taylor Raddysh to beat the Dallas netminder on a wrist shot for a 3-2 lead. Lindgren stopped all 10 shots he faced from the Stars to secure the 3-2 win for the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

Three Stars for the Washington Capitals

Two Washington Capitals forwards were listed as the NHL’s Three Stars of the Game. Forwards Taylor Raddysh and Tom Wilson were voted the first and second start, with Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson earning third-star honors.

Raddysh’s game-winning goal late in the second period earned him the first star. The 26-year-old scores his first goal for the Washington Capitals organization after arriving as a free agent on July 1, 2024. Raddysh has played 228 goals with an even split of 37 goals and 37 assists for 74 points in his fifth NHL season

Tom Wilson continues to play a powerful role for Washington after signing the massive seven-year contract in August 2023. Wilson scored 18 times last season on a 10.7% shooting mark in his career, which was a bit low for his standards. From 2019 - 2023, when he typically scored 20 goals per season, Wilson averaged closer to a 15% shooting percentage. While indeed a tiny sample size, Wilson scored three times on eight shots, which is good for an economical 37.5% scoring rate.

Since we don’t award to visiting teams here, Washington Capitals starting goalie Charlie Lindgren earned third-star honors with 22 saves on 24 shots. The 30-year-old goalie stopped 92% of the shots the previously unbeaten Dallas Stars directed his way.
