Amichai Yisrael Yehoshua Oster of Karnei Shomron, Israel, who died on Jan. 1 while serving in Gaza.Oster is survived by his parents, Marcy and Dr. Howard Oster and his three siblings. He was born in Cleveland, and his mother grew up attending Warrensville Center Synagogue, which was a predecessor congregation to Oheb Zedek Cedar Sinai Synagogue. His extended family attended the ceremony, including his grandmother, Elaine Spiegel, and uncle, Stuart Spiegel, who described him as a “dedicated young man with incredible energy,” according to a news release.“He loved the Jewish people and the land of Israel,” Stuart Spiegel said in the release “He was passionate about nature and was a gifted photographer.According to the release, Oster was traveling cross-country and spent three weeks in Cleveland with his family before the war began, prompting his return to Israel.“Amichai was traveling but volunteered to return to Israel when the war broke out because he couldn’t stand the thought that his unit would be fighting without him,” Rabbi Noah Leavitt said in the release. “He embodied our tradition’s values of joining with others to serve and sacrifice on behalf of the Jewish people.”Marcy Oster was a former staff reporter for the Cleveland Jewish News.</div></body>
