Michigan HC Sherrone Moore's harsh comments following the loss to Illinois hint at more QB changes to come

Head coach Sherrone Moore is beyond frustrated at this point when it comes to the Michigan offense. He just seems sad, perhaps even heartbroken, to see how awful his offense remains now seven games into the season. Moore's emotions were on full display at his post-game press conference where he fought through some tears at first to begin talking about how horrific the Michigan offense performed in the 21-7 loss to Illinois.

Moore didn't let his emotions hold him back from speaking harsh truths about his team, and what needs to be done in order to improve moving forward. And as you'll see throughout the post-game interview, it seems as though Moore is hinting at yet another pending quarterback change:

"Just overall, offensively it was not good enough at all. Just disappointing in a lot of areas. Jack [Tuttle] can't turn the ball over. We've got to get the guys that when they're open, we've got to complete those passes. We've just got to be better."

The entire focus for the Michigan offense this week was supposed to be taking care of the ball, not committing turnovers, since that has been what's plagued every Wolverines quarterback all year long. Apparently new starting quarterback Jack Tuttle missed that memo because he lost two turnovers once again.

For those fans that watched the game, they might notice that the interception featured in the post above was one that didn't even officially count because the play was called back due to an unrelated-to-the-play penalty. On top of making this horrible throw, Tuttle threw another interception that did count and fumbled two times, losing one of them to Illinois.

That kind of play simply cannot be tolerated if Michigan wants to have any hope whatsoever moving forward. But it wasn't all doom and gloom. Moore did give credit where it was due with both tight end Colston Loveland and running back Kalel Mullings who led the team in receiving and rushing, respectively.

"I thought Colston played well. He made some plays. I thought Kalel played well, ran hard. When you have three turnovers in a Big Ten game it doesn't matter who you're playing you're not going to win so we just have to be better on offense."

Again, Moore mentioned the turnovers. The entire post-game press conference was no longer than seven minutes in total time, and yet Moore mentioned turnovers (and the importance of not committing them) at least a half dozen times.

When asked about the quarterback competition, and whether it will be ongoing following yet another dumpster fire of a performance Moore had this to say:

"Yeah, I mean, you can't turn the ball over. I mean, you don't want to go to four quarterbacks. You don't want to have to through this process. But you've got to get a guy that's going to take care of the football. so we're going to see what we've got to do and we'll have that conversation as we go."

The part about "four" quarterbacks seems rather telling. Michigan has already started three quarterbacks in Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and Jack Tuttle. It seems as though Sherrone Moore is not against giving a fourth option a try. Who will that fourth quarterback be if Michigan does indeed try yet another new passer? It will very likely either be Jadyn Davis, the high pedigree four star freshman, or Jayden Denegal, the dual threat junior with very little playing experience throughout his career.

It's certainly not set in stone that Michigan will go to a fourth passer, but all three of the quarterbacks who have tried their hand have failed miserably in taking care of the ball and/or moving the ball downfield consistently. It sounds like executing on the little things and taking care of the ball on every drive are the two key things Moore has to see out of his quarterbacks:

"No I don't think it's a [grit thing]--it's an execution thing. It's not that these guys aren't tough or gritty. We've just got to execute the little things. We've got to make the completions. We've got to find proper hat placement to do little things and not turn the ball over."

It might just be time to hit the reset button, giving the true freshman Jadyn Davis a try. That way Michigan could at least start building towards the future.
