Crunchyroll Revives NewType Magazine In Special Edition

Newtype Magazine is returning to the United States with a special print edition issue for Comic Con. All of this is being done in collaboration with Crunchyroll News. Last published in 2008, this is anime journalism, as only Newtype and Crunchyroll can provide. This issue will be available at Comic-Con for free while supplies last. Some brand new art for the film OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom decorates its front cover.

NewType Anime Magazine Revival

The Newtype Magazine was last seen in the United States back in 2008. This new edition comes with a lot of stuff for readers. The most prominent is the new art featured on the front and back covers. It also contains interviews with Naoyuki Ito and Norihiro Naganuma, just to name a few. These interviews are exclusive to this special issue for the time being.

Markus Gerdemann, the Senior Vice President of Marketing for CrunchyRoll commented that “Newtype magazine has long been synonymous with anime culture. The English version helped extend that connection to fans and offers a sense of community. This is especially important since anime was still a niche interest at the time.”

Anime today is less niche than when Newtype Magazine started. As a result, the release is largely more sentimental than anything. It still holds a special place in the hearts of anime fans, and seeing it in print in English again is, therefore, incredibly special to many people. This will interest people who remember when Newtype ended its run and have fond memories of it.

New York Comic Con Collab

Newtype Magazine's return will be as a limited run at the New York Comic Con only. While there may well be future releases or extra prints, nothing is confirmed yet. Until we learn more, this is just a special Comic-Con event collectible. These magazines could very well wind up being special events only, although that seems unlikely. What we know so far is that comic con has a limited run available for attendees. Additionally, during Comic Con’s Overlord panel, a special signed copy will be given away.

Final Thoughts

Newtype Magazine's last feature in the US was in 2008, but it is now set to return. This returning edition is packed with a ton of new stuff for fans to enjoy. Some of the most significant are cover artwork and interviews with prominent anime directors and creators. Within its 16 pages, readers will find deep dives into popular series, including exclusive art and interviews.

This issue is a collaborative effort to highlight some of the best anime releases of the year. For now, it will only be a limited release at New York Comic Con. Whether or not there will be regular editions of Newtype Magazine going forward remains to be seen. However, if the release does well then Newtype will want to make it a regular event.
