A video shot in California captured stunning images of dolphins playing in glowing bioluminescent tides.

University of California, San Diego photographer Erik Jepsen captured the video off Scripps Pier, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography said in an Oct. 16 Facebook post.

The video shows dolphins leaving electric blue wakes through the waves as they swim and play.

Bioluminescent tides are produced by blooms of microorganisms known as dinoflagellates, which appear reddish-brown in daylight, the institution said.

“At night, when the phytoplankton are agitated by waves or other movement in the water, they emit a dazzling neon blue glow,” the institution said.

“Globally, red tide events are increasing in frequency. Locally, there may be more frequent events since the 1960s,” bioluminescence expert Michael Latz said, according to the institution.

Previous red tides have lasted between a week and a month or more, experts said.
