The Michigan Wolverines had high expectations for 2024 after winning the national championship over the Washington Huskies last season. Michigan came into the season ranked ninth in the AP Preseason Top 25 but has not lived up to that ranking.

With Jim Harbaugh no longer in Ann Arbor, the struggles have been real for the Wolverines. Under first-year head coach Sherrone Moore, Michigan ended its home and regular-season winning streak. The Wolverines lost in Ann Arbor for the first time since 2020 and in the regular season for the first time since 2021 under Moore this season.

Michigan has struggled to find consistency at quarterback without JJ McCarthy, who is now in the NFL. Alex Orji, Davis Warren, and Jack Tuttle have all spent time under center for the Wolverines this season. However, they have combined for a disappointing 898 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Michigan's struggles continued in Week 8, as it lost 21-7 to the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Wolverines' only touchdown came with 1:40 left in the first half. Michigan struggled to keep its offense on the field, going 5-for-14 on third-down conversions throughout the game.

The Wolverines gave Illinois three extra possessions due to turnovers, with Jack Tuttle throwing one interception. Tuttle and running back Donovan Edwards both lost one fumble each as well.

On a recent " Always College Football " episode, Greg McElroy kept things short and sweet when discussing Michigan's season, calling it a mess.

"...They just can't manufacture enough separation," McElroy said. "I mean, three more turnovers. Turnovers continue to be their Achilles heel. It's just Michigan's a mess is what they are."

With the Week 8 win, the Fighting Illini snapped a six-game losing streak to the Wolverines. Michigan last lost to Illinois in 2009, also in Champaign.

Michigan takes on the Michigan State Spartans next on Oct. 26. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.

The head coach will be short lived. He’s going to lose to transfers and recruitment will suffer.
