SEC Announces Harsh Penalty for Texas Following Trash-Throwing Incident

The SEC has reprimanded Texas after fans littered the field with trash during Saturday's loss to Georgia.

During the third quarter, play was interrupted and delayed when some fans threw objects onto the field, disrupting the game for both teams.

It came after a controversial pass interference call on Texas that negated an interception. After a long delay due to the debris on the field, officials reversed the call.

“The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. “The SEC is assigned responsibility by its membership to enforce its sportsmanship and game management policies and these actions are consistent with that oversight responsibility, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews.”

The Longhorns will have to pay a $250,00 fine and "use all available resources, including security, stadium and television video, to identify individuals who threw objects onto the playing field or at the opposing team." Any individuals found to have participated will be banned from Texas athletic events for the rest of the year, per the SEC.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart did not mince words when talking about the incident in his postgame press conference.

"I will say now we have a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, that you've got a chance to get your call reversed," Smart said .

It was a crucial moment in the game, but Georgia was able to hang on for a 30-15 victory.
