Principal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin will be at the podium Saturday, and he invites the audience to come with wands, capes and costumes for an evening of “Literary Thrillers” at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater. “In putting together this program, I started with a healthy dose of the great music from the ‘Harry Potter’ series, then brought in other thrilling classics,” O’Loughlin said. “John Williams created the quintessential sound of wizards and witches, then he passed the torch to others like Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. Photo courtesy of Dena O’Loughlin.</figcaption></figure>A departure from fantasy will be music composed for America’s most popular novel, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winner “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) created the score for the 1962 movie by the same title, one of more than 150 soundtracks he wrote for the silver screen from 1951 (“Saturday’s Hero”) through 2002 (“Far From Heaven”). His music enriched such movies as “The Magnificent Seven,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Hawaii.” Among the most prolific of film composers, in 1965 alone he wrote for five major movies. O’Loughlin refers to the selection by Bernstein as a gem in the program. “It is haunting and beautiful music that illuminates the lush and gorgeous sound of the orchestra,” he said.Keeping with tradition, the first Pops series concert of the season will open with “Star Spangled Banner.”In addition to Harry Potter themes, the program will include music from “Twilight,” “Hook” and “Lord of the Rings.”Audience members are invited to attend in costumes within safe and tasteful parameters.
