NFL stadiums will lose $11B from climate threats by 2050: Report

( NewsNation ) — Some of the nation’s biggest football stadiums could be in climate-induced peril by 2050, a new Climate X report found.

The report, which assessed 30 stadiums across the country for their vulnerability to climate hazards like flooding, wildfires and storm surge , identified three stadiums facing a troublesome future.

MetLife Stadium

The home of the the New York Giants and New York Jets , the New Jersey stadium is predicted to face the highest total loss percentage of all stadiums: 184%, or a whopping 5.6 billion.

Climate X points to the stadium’s low elevation and exposure to flooding as the reason behind the pricey prediction.

SoFi Stadium

The Inglewood, California, stadium, which hosts the Los Angeles Rams, will “suffer a cumulative loss percentage of 69%,” leading to losses of $4.38 billion.

State Farm Stadium

The third highest estimated loss goes to Arizona’s State Farm Stadium, which is estimated to incur $965 million in cumulative damages (a 39% total loss) in the coming decades.

The report points to Arizona’s high heat, arid climate and increased flooding risks as potential problems for the Glendale venue.

‘This report is a wake-up call’: Climate X founder

The report emphasized stadiums’ importance to local communities, as they often serve as the venue for sports, entertainment and community activities.

“Rising climate risks could lead to significant repair costs, higher insurance premiums, and disruptions that would impact not only games but also the local economies that rely on these facilities,” the report reads in part.
