Both are coming off of breakout seasons, leading their teams to the playoffs, and establishing themselves as the standard for the next generation of young quarterbacks. Fans have had today’s matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans circled on their calendars for some time now, and the teams gave us a game to remember. An ugly, ugly game. </p><p>There were 8 lead changes, including the game-winning FG by the Packers’ new kicker Brandon McManus. There was sloppy play by both teams, but it seemed like the Packers in particular left a ton of points on the field. Despite some frustrating play on offense, Green Bay came away with a 24-22 win, and have a 5-2 record in a tight NFC North. Let’s dive into this week’s winners and losers.</p><h2>Winner: Josh Jacobs</h2><p>The Packers RB had a really nice game today, recording 76 yards on the ground from 12 carries. The offensive line did a nice job creating gaps for him, and he was able to create some explosive plays, including his longest gain of the day, a 27-yarder. There was another 14-yard run that looked like it might be a house call, until a defender got his hand on Jacobs’ foot and brought him down.</p><p>More importantly, though: THE STREAK HAS BEEN BROKEN. As you may or may not have heard, Josh Jacobs held the record for most consecutive receptions without a TD catch. This streak officially ended at 211 catches today, as Jacobs finally got his first career receiving TD, an 8-yarder in the team’s first drive of the second half. Today, however, was a tough one for the second-year receiver. He recorded his fifth official drop of the season, and it was a big one. This would’ve resulted in a 40+ yard gain, but ended up leading to a Packers punt and a deficit at halftime. Reed ended the day with 2 catches on 4 targets for 10 yards. Is a <i>Freaky Friday</i> body-switch with Dontayvion Wicks to blame? Perhaps. We’ll get into Reed’s other mistakes when we dive into today’s horrid special teams performance.</p><h2>Winner: Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks</h2><p>Thank the heavens for Doubs and Wicks today, who combined for 11 catches on 16 targets for 142 yards. The remaining-six Packers who caught a pass combined for 13 catches and 78 yards. Doubs was his usual strong-handed self, and Wicks seemed to turn things around a little bit today after a tough season of drops. Doubs’ final stat line was 8/10 for 94 yards, and Wicks finished the day 3/6 for 48 yards and a score. Overall, the Packers offense had a rough day, and struggled to capitalize off of a strong defensive performance. When the two sides of the ball finally manage to click at the same time, this team can be scary. The Packers have been struggling with their special teams unit for as long as I can remember, and today was one of the uglier days they’ve had in some time. There was poor decision making across the board, with the exception of P Daniel Whelan, who once again had a wonderful performance, making him my Sweet Baby Angel of the Game.</p><p>Jayden Reed decided to attempt a return of a punt that went into the Packers’ endzone, and made it all the way to the 4-yard line. His own 4-yard line. With absolutely atrocious field position, the Packers promptly went three-and-out. On the flip side, Keisean Nixon (who would normally return a punt/kick even if it went outside the stadium) decided not to field a punt that landed at about the 14-yard line. Corey Ballentine ended up touching the ball, making it live, and the Texans recovered, then promptly scored two plays later. ST coordinator Rich Bisaccia absolutely has to do something about the awful play we’ve been seeing from this unit, because the show is getting old.</p><h2>Winner: Eric Wilson</h2><p>LB Quay Walker went down with a scary head injury early in the second quarter of the game, and was quickly ruled out with a concussion. With Walker out, we saw a lot more of LB Eric Wilson in his place, and WHAT. A. GAME. Wilson had one of his best days as a pro today, in all areas of the defense. He was sacking the quarterback, stuffing the run, causing incompletions, you name it. He created plays which forced the Texans to punt multiple times today, and was directly responsible for Houston being held to 22 points despite having the edge at time of possession. </p><p>His first big play came on 2nd and 10 at Green Bay’s 32 yard line, when he tackled RB Joe Mixon for a 2-yard loss. The Texans had to settle for a field goal after an incompletion on the next play. At halftime, the Texans were up 19-14, and they were starting the second half with the ball. On 3rd and 5, Wilson had an 8-yard sack on QB CJ Stroud, forcing a punt, and the Packers were able to take the lead during their next drive. </p><p>A couple drives later, Wilson forced another punt with a 9-yard sack on third down. The next drive? Another Wilson tackle for a loss, setting up a 3rd-and-long which the Texans failed to convert. It’s horrific, but so fun at the same time. QB Jordan Love has made it a habit this season of making some of the most dangerous, silly throws you’ll ever see, and then throwing an absolute laser of a pass that makes your jaw drop a few plays later. The touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft? The touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks? BEAUTIES, ABSOLUTE BEAUTIES. Things obviously need to be cleaned up, but I’m fully enjoying the heart palpitations for now, if I’m being honest. There’s something really refreshing about having a quarterback who takes more risks, as frustrating as it may be. He should pass #9 David Whitehurst, who has 6,205 yards, next week. Love is also sneaking up on a record currently shared by Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, who have thrown 2 or more TD passes in 14 consecutive games. Today was Love’s 11th consecutive game with multiple touchdown passes. Like I said, there’s a lot about his game that needs to be cleaned up, but he’s in very good company.
