Over the course of Tom Brady’s legendary NFL career, very few players or coaches could claim that they gave the seven-time Super Bowl champion fits. But on the call of Sunday’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, Brady admitted his struggles over the years when facing Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo has long been regarded as one of the best defensive minds in all of football. And in regards to Brady, he has indeed gotten the better of him in some of the biggest moments of Brady’s career.

2007 was the first year that Spagnuolo ever served as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, serving in that role for two seasons for the New York Giants. In his first year in New York, he famously got the better of Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, ending their undefeated season in the process.

It was not a one-sided rivalry between Brady and Spagnuolo though, as Brady would go on to get his revenge against Spagnuolo’s Chiefs in Super Bowl LV as quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Spagnuolo has done an excellent job with the Chiefs’ defense again this year, coming into Sunday’s matchup with the 49ers ranking in the top five in the league in points allowed on the year.

Brady acknowledged Spagnuolo’s prowess on the call of Sunday’s game, admitting that he was “the bane of his existence” throughout his NFL career.

“There’s Steve Sagnuolo,” said Brady. “He’s been the bane of my existence. I still have PTSD from some of those blitzes in the 2007 Super Bowl. I know my friend Michael Strahan says he is the greatest guy in the room. But I don’t want to hear that. I do not want to hear that. He’s been the bane of my existence. What a coach he is.”

The Spagnuolo-Brady rivalry isn’t quite as high-profile as the Brady-Manning rivalry was, which he has also spoken about early on in his tenure with Fox. But clearly, Brady didn’t envy the 49ers task of going up against Spagnuolo and the Chiefs in Week 7.
