    Beloit College edges Knox 1-0 in women's soccer

    BELOIT — One second half goal was all Beloit College’s women’s soccer team needed Saturday afternoon as it blanked visiting Knox College 1-0.

    The Buccaneers (4-8-3, 3-1-1 MWC) outshot the Prairie Fire (1-10-2, 0-3-1) 9-5 in the first half with one shot on goal for Knox and four for Beloit. The game was scoreless at the break.

    Janesville Craig graduate Abigail Membrino broke the 0-0 tie 27 seconds into the second half. Natalie Ortiz assisted on the goal that snuck past the Prairie Fire goalkeeper.

    Beloit finished with 21 shots and 1-0 on goal. Knox had eight shots and two on goal.

    Prior to the game, the senior women’s soccer players were recognized for their four seasons with the Bucs. Grace Hartwig, Megan Thompson, Hannah Sempsrott, Abbey Scott, Kaitlyn Hudetz, Daisy Kleinhoffer, Alexxa Schubert, Lauryn Volza and Maya Betzler were all saluted. They have an overall record of 26-27-16 and a Midwest Conference mark of 17-5-7. They have one MWC Tournament title and three MWC Tournament appearances.

    The Bucs return to the field Tuesday to host MWC-leading Lake Forest.

    • CROSS COUNTRY: The Beloit men’s and women’s teams competed in the Wisconsin Private Championships hosted by Concordia-Wisconsin in Mequon, Wis., on Saturday.

    The Beloit men were led by Dylan Malmgren in 19th (28:37.3). The next Bucs to cross the finish line was Aiden Cortinas (30:17.7), followed by Sawyer Wall (31:02.7).

    For the women, Simone De Montigny placed 22nd (25:03.3). Sophia Miller clocked in at 26:30.5 and Carter Browne was next in 26:57.7.

    The Bucs will run in the MWC Championships on Nov. 2 in Appleton, Wis. They will run at the Reid Municipal Golf Course for the second time this season.

    • MEN’S SOCCER: Beloit (2-13, 1-4 MWC) lost its fourth straight game, 3-0 to Knox on Saturday at the Strong Athletic Complex.

    The Bucs managed just three shots against Knox (5-7-2, 2-2-1 MWC). They host Lake Forest at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

    • VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Beloit (2-17, 0-4 MWC) dropped straight sets to Monmouth (15-9, 4-1 MWC), 25-11, 25-17, 25-15.

    McKayla Simao led the Bucs in kills (seven), aces (one) and digs (seven). Freshman Emily Ortiz led the setters with 11 assists.

    The Buccaneers return home on Wednesday to host Cornell College at 7 p.m.
