New York Jets guard Xavier Newman was placed on a spine board and taken to hospital immediately after suffering a scary injury versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Sunday night, Newman was blocked by a Steelers defender following Beanie Bishop Jr's second interception of Aaron Rodgers . However, Newman, while conscious, lay face down on the turf.

He was carefully stretchered off the field before being rushed to hospital. NBC reporter Melissa Stark said on the broadcast: "We have a quick update on Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman. He has left for the hospital. The ambulance is on its way.

"We can tell you we have movement in his limbs. He squeezed the athletic training staff's hands, so a great sign there."

Newman remained down on the sideline for several minutes following the third-quarter collision. Jets and Steelers players surrounded Newman as he lay prone, with play halted for several minutes. Newman was placed on a back board by medical staff and taken off the field on a cart by paramedics, who removed his facemask to effectively tend to him on the field.

The injury took place in the third quarter on an interception by Rodgers after his pass bobbled out of the hands of star receiver Garrett Wilson . Bishop was there to snag the ball to add a second interception of the game, and the safety returned the ball to the 1-yard line before he was tackled by Davante Adams .

During Bishop's return, Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen helped block for his undrafted rookie teammate. He hit Newman with a seemingly innocuous block, and the guard was knocked to the ground where he appeared to hit his head.

Newman got back to his feet only to worryingly collapse as he attempted to make it to the sidelines. The 25-year-old went down and needed immediate medical attention.

Newman impressed during his college days at Baylor, but went undrafted in 2022. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans as a free agent, and joined the Jets midway through the 2023 NFL season.

Newman came in for Alijah Vera-Tucker, who had also exited the Steelers clash with an injury.
