KSNF/KODE — A reminder from the Better Business Bureau about hurricane relief efforts – scammers like to take advantage of urgent needs.

Help is still needed in several southeast states after Hurricanes Helene and Milton shredded homes and businesses – killing over 200 people.

Pamela Hernandez with the Better Business Bureau in Springfield says scammers will often use this opportunity to spread misinformation or create fake fundraisers.

Scammers these days are often using previously used images or AI images to make their scam look legitimate.

She recommends doing your research by giving to well-vetted and well-known charities.

“Give.org is a great place to go. That is part of BBB, and you can see how charities stack up against our 20 standards for charity accountability. That way you know that the organization is being transparent and that they’re making good use of your donations,” said Pamela Hernandez, BBB Springfield regional director.

Hernandez also reminds us, sending goods – especially clothes – into an area is not advised.

So if you want to help, find out who is already on the ground before deciding where and how to give.
