    HOLMDEL, NJ: The Holmdel Heritage Committee has set a date for their exciting Holmdel Heritage Day!

    The event will take place on Sunday, December 8th, from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM, at Holmdel High School and the Holmdel community is invited! It will be a great time for all ages!

    This special event will bring the community together to celebrate the diverse cultural traditions that shape Holmdel. Please click here to reserve tickets by November 15 th . Reservations are capped at 500.

    According to the Holmdel Heritage Committee, the event is made possible with support from the Holmdel Township Committee, the Holmdel Public School District, the Heritage Committee, and community supporters.  The event will showcase and promote cultural awareness and the great unity that exists within Holmdel.

    This collaboration between the Township and the Holmdel Public Schools, reflects the importance the township and school community places on heritage.  The inaugural Holmdel Heritage Day supports an inclusive environment where all backgrounds are welcomed and celebrated!

    So, what is the celebration going to include?

    Holmdel Heritage Day will feature a variety of cultural displays, performances, crafts, and games from different heritages around the world.

    One of the key highlights of the event will be an art contest for high school students, where young artists will have the chance to present their creative interpretations of heritage and cultural identity. Students interested in participating are encouraged to submit their artwork in advance and exhibit it on the day of the event (more details on the art contest are beneath this article).

    The significance of celebrating heritage goes beyond acknowledging different cultures; it strengthens community ties and mutual respect, as well as provides a platform for residents to connect with their roots and share their stories.

    Events like Holmdel Heritage Day create a sense of belonging for everyone and deepen our understanding of each other’s cultural legacies.

    To ensure the success of this multi-cultural celebration, the Heritage Committee, in partnership with the school district and township committee, is asking for community support. There are many ways for everyone to get involved!

    Ways to participate:

    • Donations of food, snacks, and desserts from local restaurants and stores that represent different cultures.
    • Cultural programs or activities showcasing crafts or games from various countries and backgrounds.
    • Volunteers , including both high school students and adults, to help with event operations.
    • Monetary sponsorships and general donations from businesses, organizations and community members, to assist with event costs.

    This will be a festive event! Attendees have the option to dress in traditional cultural attire, which will grant them free admission to the event. Otherwise, a very small admission fee will be charged. Tickets can be reserved through the QR code or link on the event flyer .

    Join this memorable celebration of the cultures that make Holmdel a unique and diverse community!! Be a part of something really great! This event is made possible with contributions from Holmdel Township, Holmdel Public School District, and sponsors and donors from the community. Holmdel Heritage Day Admission fee is: $5 for adults, $3 for students (preschool - High School), and free for children under the age of 3. Guests can bring exact cash or check if paying at the door. Note: Non-Holmdel attendees are welcome, however they must be accompanied by a Holmdel resident attendee at the door.

    2024 Holmdel Heritage Day "Cultures in Art” Art Contest Overview:

    This contest aims to celebrate the diversity of cultures through traditional painting and art. Participants will create original artwork inspired by various cultures. The winners of the contest will be determined by local artists, school art teachers, and Holmdel Heritage Day attendees.

    Eligibility:

    ● Open to high school age students who reside in Holmdel.

    ● Participants must enter individually. Participants may not collaborate with others to create their artwork.

    Theme:

    ● Artwork must reflect a specific culture or blend multiple cultures.

    ● The artwork should convey the essence of the chosen culture(s).

    Artwork Specifications:

    ● Medium: Traditional art mediums only (acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencils, crayons, etc.)

    ● Size: Minimum 8” x 11” to maximum 24” x 36”

    ● Material: Paper, canvas, wood panel, or other sturdy materials

    ● Frame: Optional, but artwork must be ready to display

    ● Artwork must NOT identify the artist (ex. signatures)

    Registration:

    ● Deadline: November 15 th

    ● Entry: Free

    ● Participants fill out the registration form for each entry.

    Submission:

    ● Each participant may submit up to 2 entries.

    ● Must include the following on a 5x7 index card alongside the artwork:

    1. Display spot number

    2. Name of the school

    3. School grade level

    4. Title of artwork

    5. Brief description of the artwork and its cultural inspiration(s)

    Set up:

    Submissions will be assigned a display spot and number. All participating artists must set up their artwork at the designated location in the Holmdel High School Common Area on December 8th between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM noon. The display number assigned to a submission will depend on the timestamp of registration.

    Grading:

    ● Grading and Attendee Voting Time: December 8 th , 1:30PM-4:00PM.

    ● Local Artists and School Art Teachers (Scale of 1-100): 60%

    Event attendees (1 vote = 1 point): 40%

    Judging Criteria:

    ● Score: total maximum 100 points

    ● Creativity and originality (max. 25 points)

    ● Interpretation of the cultural theme (max. 30 points)

    ● Technical skills (max. 20 points)

    ● Overall visual impact (max. 25 points)

    Announcement:

    A list of the winners will be announced at the end of the event. Decisions are final after the announcement.

    Recognition Standings:

    ● 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place and Honorable mention.

    ● Winners will be recognized at a future Township Committee meeting. Artwork may be displayed at a location on public Township property for a period of time.

    Rules and Regulations:

    ● All artworks must be original and created specifically for this contest. Art must be made using a traditional medium (acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencils, crayons,etc.).

    ● Participants retain copyright to their artwork but grant the Holmdel Heritage Committee the right to reproduce images for press releases, social media, and any promotional purposes related to this contest without compensation.

    ● The Holmdel Heritage Committee reserves the right to reject any artwork that does not adhere to the rules or is deemed inappropriate.

    ● The Holmdel Heritage Committee does not hold any responsibility or risk regarding the artwork during the display.

    ● Artwork must be registered and set up by the artwork’s owner.

    ● Artwork must be picked up at the end of the event by the artwork’s owner.

    ● By submitting artwork, participants agree to abide by the contest rules.

    ● Participants under the age of 18 must include permission from their parents or guardians in the registration form.
