    Free 'Parent University' teaches literacy tips, features dinner

    NORTH PORT — Parents of students of all ages are invited to participate in one of two free “Parent University” sessions that teach tools and strategies needed to enhance literacy skills at home.

    The Sarasota County School District has set “Literacy for All” sessions for:

    5-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at Sarasota High School, 2155 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota5-7:15 p.m. Nov. 4 at North Port High School, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port.

    The sessions will feature “expert-led workshops where parents can discover effective strategies to support literacy at every grade level,” according to the district’s information about the event.

    There will also be hands-on activities designed to show “practical tools for fostering reading and writing skills at home,” he release states.

    Parents can also learn how to use student data “to access and understand your child’s literacy progress,” the release states.

    At 4 p.m., ahead of each event, there will be a Community Resource Fair. The fairs will feature representatives from FEMA, local banks, JFCS, NAMI, and other community partners, offering disaster relief assistance.

    A complimentary dinner will be provided for all. Parents can get access to community resources and vendors and obtain take-home food boxes at the Sarasota High event, or pantry items at NPHS.
