Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green has agreed to a rookie extension with the team, and the agreement contains one notable clause that is an NBA first.

Green is signing a three-year contract extension with the Rockets worth $106 million, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The third year of the deal is a player option, making Green the first player to negotiate a two-plus-one structure as part of a rookie extension.

By making that third year a player option, Green has the opportunity to significantly increase his earning ability. A number of veteran players have structured contracts like this, but Green is the first one to do it at such an early stage in his NBA career.

Green averaged 19.6 points per game for the Rockets last year on a team that improved its win total by 19 from 2022-23. Though the team was apparently willing to dangle him in trade talks at one point, he is clearly a building block for the franchise as it eyes further improvement.
