After a disappointing finish to the season, the Chicago Cubs announced that gold glover Nico Hoerner underwent flexor tendon surgery on his right hand. The news is interesting as there was no inclination of an injury.

Fortunately, he will have plenty of time to rehab before spring training begins in 2025. If the Cubs are going to have success, a healthy Nico Hoerner needs to be a big part of that winning formula.

It remains to be seen what direction the team goes, but Hoerner will look to continue his steady production with fellow battery mate Dansby Swanson. The Cubs built this team from up the middle and that's what defines them.

The Cubs can still go a variety of ways to shake things up for an underachieving team. Matt Shaw continues to wait in the wings and free-agent options may present themselves. Players like Ha-Seong Kim and Willy Adames are just a few who could be available this offseason.

It's clear that the team needs to make changes. While Hoerner and Swanson provide solid contact, the power is sorely lacking. With organizational depth, it wouldn't be surprising if the Cubs ship Hoerner out of town.

While Hoerner recovers from surgery, the hope is that whatever has been ailing him becomes a distant memory. The Cubs are in a unique situation with their second baseman.

If they decide to trade him, there should be no shortage of suitors. If he stays then the Cubs will still have a solid homegrown talent to patrol the middle infield with Dansby Swanson.
