( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A man has been charged with DWI in connection to a crash that killed one woman, injured two Hickory police officers, and damaged a police cruiser, authorities said.

Officers with the Hickory Police Department responded to calls regarding the accident around 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21, on Fairgrove Church Road.

Taylor Pendergrast, of Lenoir, was found suffering from serious injuries and transported to an area medical center and then airlifted to another facility where she was pronounced dead.

An initial investigation stated that police were investigating an earlier wreck and that Pendergrast and two police officers were standing next to a parked Hickory police cruiser when Sidney Baker, 33, of Hickory, drifted into the divider lane and struck the woman and two officers.

Baker was arrested and now faces multiple charges including DWI and drug possession.

One of the two officers struck was transported to an area medical center for treatment. He has since been released from the hospital.
